Project Overview

SHINE Study: The Research on the Scale-up of the Hormonal Intra-Uterine Device in New and Emerging Markets. The goal of this study is to document the rollout of the hormonal IUD in Malawi’s public sector to inform future scale-up efforts. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation through FHI 360.

Project Period: January 2024 to January 2025

Project Overview

LIDIA—A Prospective Longitudinal Study of Hormonal IUD Continuation in Malawi’s Public Sector—follows hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) users over time to understand their experiences and the factors influencing continued use or discontinuation. Building on the SHINE study, LIDIA generates evidence to strengthen family planning services and support informed contraceptive choice. CHAD coordinates study implementation and participant follow-up, working with reproductive health stakeholders to inform improvements in hormonal IUD service delivery in Malawi.

Project Overview

NCD Connect is an 18-month project (February 2026–July 2027) strengthening healthcare in rural Malawi by integrating screening for non-communicable diseases into existing cervical cancer screening services. It brings together blood pressure and blood sugar checks and clinical breast examinations to support earlier detection and referral for hypertension, diabetes and suspected breast cancer among women attending cervical screening.

Funded by the Scottish Government through its Health Partnership Programme, managed by Global Health Partnerships, the project is co-led by the University of Edinburgh and Nkhoma Hospital, working with CHAD, Malawi’s Ministry of Health and the Malawi Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance. Implementation covers nine facilities: Nkhoma, Mlambe and Mzuzu hub hospitals and six associated health centres. Activities include training healthcare workers, strengthening referral pathways and raising community awareness, with an emphasis on equitable access for rural and underserved women. CHAD leads the project’s monitoring, evaluation and learning activities, including baseline and endline assessments, stakeholder and client interviews, and digital systems for tracking screening services. Through data management, staff support and analysis, CHAD is generating evidence on the feasibility and acceptability of integrated screening to guide service improvements and inform potential expansion across Malawi.
